Academy AP Physics I/ AP C Mechanics Info and Syllabus
Academy Physics I/ AP Mechanics C (Here to after referred to as Academy Physics 1/C) is a class that offers STEM Academy students the opportunity to acquire two AP Credits as well as gaining college credit for wither of these physics courses. AP Physics I and AP Physics C cover the same material, namely the field of Mechanics, and 85% of the Mechanics C curriculum is covered in AP Physics I. The difference in the courses is that AP Physics C requires the use of some fundamental calculus in a few learning objectives. Roughly 12 of the 80 learning objectives involve some level of calculus in some fashion. A typical 15 point problem that involves calculus on the AP Physics C exam would only have about 3 of those points related to the calculus while the rest could be earned just using physics knowledge gained in the AP physics I course.
Physics I/C is taught to the STEM academy students in this fashion because of the overlap and similarity in content and learning objectives.
Grading for the Physics I/C course is slightly different than in a normal science class. These students will receive a grade for both AP Physics I and a separate grade for AP Physics C Mechanics, as they are receiving credit on their transcript for both of these courses. The grade students receive each semester for AP Physics C Mechanics is comprised of three factors. 85% of the Physics C Mechanics grade will be based upon the Grade students earn in AP Physics I. The other 15% of the grade will be split 5% of calculus based homework quizzes and 10% on calculus based quizzes. This fifteen percent difference is the amount of material that is different between the courses.
